Living in West Texas, we’re used to seeing lots of dirt, but with all of this art, more color is entering the scenery and we are 100% here for it.

Whether you just want to stare at these 15 pieces of outdoor art (we do this too) or strike a pose for your next Instagram post, all of these pieces deserve a stop to admire and appreciate.

Downtown Library Murals

301 W Missouri Ave, Midland, TX 79701

This might be one of the first murals that you think of, but this is for all the right reasons. The entire building is covered in several pieces of art; some from the new renovation and some that OG Midlanders will remember.

The newest additions to the murals were done along with the renovations by local artists, Calina Mishay and Rae Ripple. Pretty cool right?

On the opposite side of the new murals is a long-time favorite, the longhorn stampede. The official name of this piece is “In The New World” where local artists, Peter Himmelberg and Tom Ryan designed and executed the piece.

Obviously, the pictures don’t do the actual piece of art justice so you’ll just have to go and see for yourself.

Basin PBS Mural

203 N Main St, Midland, TX 79701

An installation done by Texas artist, Jesse Melanson, this mural celebrates both individuality and unity. This piece was done to embody all of the values of Basin PBS but also in hopes to bring more art to this area.

You won’t need to look around too long to find this piece as the colors as eye-catching and can be spotted pretty easily.

Referred to as “Art in the Alley”, more works are being planned for this area and the rest of the Downtown area.

Mr. T’s Market Mural

1100 N Big Spring St, Midland, TX 79701

If you’ve been in Midland for quite a while, this is another piece of art around town that has been around for what seems like forever.

Maybe you’ve seen it on your way to the YMCA or on your way into Mr. T’s Market, regardless, there’s something about it that makes you stop and look at it.

Over time the colors have faded and some words might have been added, but we appreciate any color where we can find it around here.

Friends of the Libraries Bookstore Mural

2305 W Michigan Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Next time you’re stopping in for a book, you’ll probably notice the mural while you’re parking. Painted by artist GG Aguilar in 2014, numerous books, colors, and birds will greet you from this mural before you enter the building.

If you’re not a regular to the Freinds of the Libraries Bookstore, this is a hidden gem around here in Midland that you need to go in and explore. If you’re not so much of a bookworm, the bookstore offers more such as used records, textbooks, audiobooks, and DVDs. With limited hours, you need to plan out your visit to the hour so you can check out everything there that is offered.

FaFa Gallery Mural

FaFa Gallery Mural

FaFa Gallery Mural

438 Andrews Hwy, Midland, TX 79701

Completed earlier this year, Artworks Midland added another piece around town to the side of local art stop, the FaFa Gallery.

The Tall City is personified in this colorful addition along with that classic West Texas sunset that we all know and love.

Like other Artworks Midland murals, the community was able to contribute and try their hand out at painting a mural. If you’re driving down Andrews Highway, you won’t miss these vibrant colors, and of course, the Tall City.

Downtown Midland Pumpjacks Mural

Downtown Midland Pumpjacks Mural

Downtown Pumpjacks Mural

400-424 W Illinois Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Another classic Midland mural is the pumpjacks mural in the heart of Downtown Midland. If you plan your visit just right, you can snag a picture when the parking lot is empty and the lighting is just right.

Painted by the employees of the Midland Chase Bank and designed by local, Peter Himmelberg, you’ve probably driven by this one a million times, but you definitely need to stop.

Popbar Midland Lions Mural

200 Spring Park Dr. Suite 300, Midland, TX 79705

These two lions at Popbar Midland are there to enjoy your cold treat with you or while you’re walking around Ally Village.

Designed by Midlander and TTU Alumnus, Baron Batch, the artist planned and executed this piece with his colorful style that can be seen in his other pieces of work.

The vibrant colors and size of these two make for a good picture background but also a good stop for just sitting and staring.

Greetings from Midland Mural

900 N. Big Spring St. Midland, TX 79701

Another great piece done by Artworks Midland embodies everything that makes Midland, Midland. At this mural, you’ll see the Bush family, the Yucca Theatre, and of course, oil rigs and pumpjacks.

The buildings that give the nickname, “The Tall City,” are shown in these letters too with the grand ol’ flag to follow.

With the added ledge under the painted mural, you have a place to sit and take in the entire piece of art or just watch the craziness of Big Spring St. Both will keep you busy if you’re wanting to get outside.

Love You Mural in Midland,Texas

Love You Mural in Midland, Texas

Love You Mural

2514 W Ohio Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Painted on the side of Pool Techniques in Midland are the words we all love to hear.

A piece done by the community and Artworks Midland, it makes for a great photo background and fund place to go and find around town.

The thought process behind this piece was that the creators wanted to inspire local youth to stay positive and to create. Like the other murals, you’ll have to search for this, but it is definitely worth seeing.

The Museum of the Southwest Mural

The Museum of the Southwest Mural

The Museum of the Southwest Mural

1705 W Missouri Ave, Midland, TX 79701

While you’re out at the Museum trying to find all of the sculptures, you HAVE to venture over to Midland’s newest mural. Completed during the 52nd Annual SeptemberFest this year, Texas artist, Mari Pohlman finished adding the final touches to the giant art piece.

The mural is full of colors and of course the museum logo, but if you look a little closer, you’ll recognize a lot of symbols. To name a few, you’ll the rings of Saturn to symbolize the Blakemore Planetarium or even the tortoise that is standing in front of the children’s wing and that is always a million degrees if you touch it.

Rainbow Z Mural

3302 Bedford Ave, Midland, TX 79703

This is what unicorn and rainbow dreams are made of. Another Artworks Midland piece is located on the side of Rainbow Z where you can get all of your favorite cold and sweet treats while also looking at some street art.

This is a more family-friendly option that the kids will love especially with the sweet treat that will surely follow your visit.

Cogdell Learning Center Mural

201 W Florida Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Midland artist, Janet Pontious (also the one responsible for tons of other murals around Midland and Odessa!) completed this piece in early 2019 for one of MC’s learning centers off-campus.

The multicultural Cogdell Learning Center’s mural features the faces of several cultures as well as native flowers, trees, and statues in celebration of everything the center does.

With all of the events that are held at the Cogdell Center as well as academic opportunities here, the mural makes for a beautiful addition to everything going on here.

Breaking Bread Midland Mural

410 E Florida Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Artworks Midland’s newest addition to their growing collection is shown on the side of local soup kitchen and ministry, Breaking Bread. The aim of this piece was to showcase the mission of Breaking Bread and what they’re doing daily for our community.

While you’re out looking for this piece of street art, we definitely have to recommend working with this great kitchen.

Faded Souls Mural

Faded Souls Mural

100 E Texas Ave, Midland, 79701

If you’re downtown, you need to stop by this to see this cool cat.

The mascot of this locally owned spot, his curled mustache, and giant spectacles was curated by the talented, Artworks Midland.

The traditional barber pole accompanies this cat and the Faded Souls logo to greet all of their customers.

Pepe’s Body Shop Mural

601-699 E Indiana Ave, Midland, TX 79701

Another locally owned business here in town is well known for their generosity and work with the community during their many years of business. While you might associate a body shop doing work with just cars, Pepe’s Body Shop has a large focus on the community as well.

To add some color to the building, various figures and words can be found on the building along with the Pepe’s logo to welcome their customers and guests.

Van Stavern Interiors

2412 W Wall St, Midland, TX 79701

Yet another amazing piece (yet to be completed) by Artworks Midland community mural project. We’d say this is one of our favorite pieces from them yet but it is a very tough race.

The warehouse is home to a few Van Stavern pieces along Wall Street. The otherwise white and blank wall of the establishment has a brand new and colorful look. The finishing touches are still being added, but from what we’ve seen, it’s a change we can get on board with.

We’re looking forward to seeing the final installment on this side of the building and the whole other side they have yet to begin.

Downtown Cowboy Mural in Midland, Texas

Downtown Cowboy Mural (not longer in existence)

Honorable Mention: Downtown Cowboy Mural

201 E Illinois Ave, Midland, TX 79701

A special shoutout and honorable mention just for the old Cowboy Mural that is no longer with us. A personal favorite of our editor-in-chief, the cowboy mural was sadly taken away earlier this year when the building was knocked down. At least we have these cool pictures to reminisce on.
