1950s Summer Movie Series-The Thing from Another World
The Bush Family Home State Historic Site announces a new program coming this summer. Four movies from the 1950s will be shown in the backyard of the home. This year’s theme is monster movies. All guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and snacks. Each event will be from 6:30-9:00 pm.
During the series, the dates, topics and speakers will be:
June 10 – The Thing from Another World (1951)
June 24 – Creature from The Black Lagoon (1954)
July 8 – Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
July 22 – Dracula (1958)
Activites associated with each movie will be available at each movie screening. Those include:
• An activity and craft about flying saucers using paper plates, frisbees, and a boomerang for The Thing from Another World.
• A water activity and fossil craft using air dry clay for the Creature from The Black Lagoon.
• An experiment and a craft for the Curse of Frankenstein.
• A movie poster design activity for Dracula.
Movie going was a major social event, with many people attending theaters regularly. Because tv ownership went up in the 1950s, theaters added to the experience with the introduction of cinerama, 3D, and other widescreen technologies. Even George W. Bush would ride his bike downtown Midland to see cowboy serials and science fiction movies.
“The Summer Movie Series is meant to showcase the entertainment in theaters while the Bush family lived in Midland in the 1950s,” said Site Educator Chase Kirby. “It will be fun for the whole family, young or old.”

The Butterfly Effect with Ralph Barbosa & Rene Vaca
The Butterfly Effect Tour brings together comics Ralph Barbosa and René Vaca for a night of comedy you won’t soon forget. The tour – originally meant to include comic Ken Flores – now carries on in honor of him. Don’t miss out on this night of laughs and remembrance.
Ralph Barbosa: One of the shyest attention hogs to ever do comedy, Ralph Barbosa’s disarming and laid-back style has made him a stand-out on stage, on TV and online. Most recently, Ralph taped his Hulu comedy special that will release in 2025. In 2024, he was nominated as one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch. After a breakout year in 2023, Ralph is touring theaters in 2024 and 2025 with his North American theater tour, Ralph Barbosa: The Super Cool Ass Tour, which is selling out and adding shows. This included selling out two theater shows during Netflix Is A Joke Fest 2024, as well as hosting the kick-off Introducing show. On October 31st, 2023, Ralph premiered his Netflix stand-up special, Ralph Barbosa: Cowabunga, which ranked as the #3 TV show on Netflix throughout its first week on the service. In January 2023, he made his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, his Comedy Central Stand-up Featuring: Ralph Barbosa set has topped 5.1 million views on YouTube. In November 2022, Ralph starred in the HBO Max comedy special, Entre Nos: The Winners 3, and earlier that year his Don’t Tell Comedy performance was released on YouTube and now has over 5.7 million views. For more on Ralph visit his website, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube pages.
René Vaca: Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, René Vaca is a 29-year-old stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. Although he started a landscaping business at 15 years old, he soon realized he wanted to pursue comedy for a living; he dropped out of college and has not looked back since. Vaca has been pursuing his dream of stand-up comedy and won the 16th annual StandUp NBC competition! Since then, Vaca has also built a following with his stand-up comedy clips reaching millions of views across his social media channels, including over 900 thousand followers on Instagram and 580 thousand followers on TikTok. Currently, he is on his nationwide tour.

Taps Across America at the Horseshoe 2025: A Community Tribute to our Fallen Heroes
Midland, TX — On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025, the Midland community will unite at The Horseshoe Amphitheater for a solemn and stirring tribute as part of the national “Taps Across America” initiative. Trumpet, cornet, and bugle players—high school age and above—are invited to participate in this meaningful event honoring those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Event Details:
Location: The Horseshoe Amphitheater, Midland, TX
Performer Call Time: 1:00 PM
Performance Time: 2:30–3:15 PM
This local gathering aligns with the national “Taps Across America” movement, which calls on musicians across the country to sound “Taps” at 3:00 PM local time on Memorial Day. This initiative extends the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress in 2000, encouraging all Americans to pause for one minute at 3:00 PM to reflect on the sacrifices of fallen military members.
“Taps Across America” began in 2020 as a way to bring Americans together during the pandemic. Instead of parades and public ceremonies, thousands of musicians— professional and amateur alike—took to their front porches and local landmarks to sound “Taps” in unison. What started as a moment of remembrance has grown into an annual Memorial Day tradition.

Midland Festival Ballet Presents Bach in Ballet
This year’s showcase is themed around Johan Sebastian Bach. The Baroque composer may seem old, and maybe even irrelevant, but many famous neoclassical ballets are set to Bach’s music - most notably Concerto Barocco by George Balanchine, which remains one of Balanchine's most performed works around the world! Neoclassical ballet is all about making the music visual, a difficult skill we start teaching and refining even in our youngest dancers. We’re excited to work with them as they hear new melodies (and instruments!) and learn about some of these ballets (an important part of a dancer’s education) while demonstrating all they’ve learned this year!
